Alex: Sydney has been captivated by the Gelato scene for quite some time now, most notably for places like Gelato Messina, Cow and the moon, RivaReno, and Gelatomassi but the trends seem to remain quite similar. Stix Deserts in Surry Hills has completely recreated and turned on its head how we eat Gelato in an innovative and clever way that is sure to captivate many.
We had been talking about making a visit to Stix since they opened but after Janelle Monae and Kimbra cancelled on us! (how dare they) we finally had the chance to go after a beautiful dinner at Rockpool Bar & Grill.
We were warmly greeted by the owner of Stix as it was dinner time on a quiet Monday night we were the only one’s in the shop. Since this was our first time, she helped us pick what we wanted and let us try a few of the flavours on display.
I got the Panna Cotta Gelato dunked in milk chocolate with Hundreds + thousands and peanuts. Firstly, let me just say that I don’t think I’ve ever seen a gelato look more artistic and beautiful then what it does at Stix. While it has a fierce competitor just up the road (Messina). The gelato is really fresh and light and surprisingly not as heavy as I thought it would be. The panna cotta was smooth with a delicious melt in your mouth texture, followed by a delicate crunch from the hardened chocolate as well as the chunks of peanuts. The main reasoning behind getting the hundreds and thousands was simply because it would look really nice in the photo! Otherwise I would’ve gone for the Salted Pretzel topping.
Bianca got the Coffee gelato dunked in dark chocolate with Peanuts and Salted Pretzels. Generally being a fan of Sweet and Salty combinations, Bianca enjoyed the clash of the Ice-Cream with the Salty chunks of Pretzels. The salted pretzels and peanut combo was definitely a hit. Her only comment “Where’s the Peanut Butter Gelato”? I went again a couple of days after my first visit and got the Hazelnut and oh my Gelato….. was it good!
I could see this place becoming popular with families, it’s a load of fun to stand behind the counter, pick your flavour, chocolate and toppings and watch it be made before your very eyes. The Gelato is also made throughout the day, so you know you are getting incredibly fresh product. Both times I went, a fresh batch was being made behind the counter.
One thing I did notice was that the gelato seemed to melt really really quickly, so I felt like I was scoffing it down. That could have been due to the 5 minutes ofย taking photos beforehand ๐ Nevertheless a great place that I have since recommended to all of my friends and has now become a regular hangout for myself and my friends.
Until next time!
