[invite] Bianca: So I couldn’t begin my ultimate Sydney pancake post without visiting the institution that is Pancakes on the Rocks. I’m sure I am one of many that have enjoyed a stack sobering up, that was in fact, how my friends and I spent the morning after our year 12 formal. BUT times have changed, pancakes are no longer a regrettable morning after decision, they’re a way of life!
The menu is huge! With over 20+ pancakes on the menu, crepes, pizza, ribs but I’m going to be honest. I view them more as a dessert option, rather than a savoury meal. So went that route ordering.
With reinforcements, Felicity & Alex in tow, we met on a chilly Saturday morning for our decadent pancake feast.
I’ve never really understood America’s fascination with pairing pancakes with eggs, it kinda freaks me out. BUT I’m a huge advocate for bacon with sweets! But for the sake of ‘research’ I ordered the Pancake Egg N Hash – pancakes with whipped butter, hash brown, scrambled eggs + bacon $18.95. The pancakes across all of the dishes we ordered were great, they all had a light airy consistency. I’ve been told they do use a ‘pre mix’. The crispy bacon was an excellent juxtaposition alongside the pancakes. I quite enjoy the super crispy texture of the webbed hash browns, I just wished they were seasoned a little more.
I adored the Long Stack – Four pancakes w/ whipped butter & maple syrup $9.95. I was a little ambitious going for 4, three is probably more manageable for those that are comfortably hungry. This was the perfect flavour profile for me, the salty hit from the butter and crispy bacon on the side and the sweet maple syrup. Texturally, these were perfect!
My next favourite was the Apple Crumble – w/marinated apples, cream, vanilla ice-cream & homemade crumble $13.95. Again, the pancakes were perfect. The apple tender to bite, with a prominent cinnamon flavour. Generous chunks of crumble adding a whole other layer of decadence.
Devils Delight – Chocolate pancakes, strawberries, cream, chocolate ice-cream and chocolate sauce $15.95 sounded great in theory but were way too rich for us. I did detect a heavy use of cocoa powder within the batter. Perhaps if we didn’t have another 6 dishes this might have gotten a look in. Chocolate lovers will be in heaven.
And finally, Nutella Pancakes -w/cream, vanilla, ice-cream & roasted hazelnuts $15.95. We’re excited by Nutella anything here at FFS, flavour wise this was up there. Lashings of Nutella made for a decadent dessert. I did find this pancake denser than the others.
Despite my initial hesitation, Pancakes on the Rocks are a very strong option for desserts. And while they aren’t perhaps the ‘high-end pancakes’ of late, price and flavour wise they are a reliable option.
